Why monitoring is essential for your business continuity

Many organisations, often unconsciously, do not have an exact picture of what is really going on in their electrical infrastructure. Often, attention is paid only when the lights go out, a production line breaks down or a transformer burns out. This reactive management - waiting for things to go wrong - is a dangerous strategy in today's era of complex power electronics (such as LED lighting, EV chargers and AC drives).

An electrical installation is constantly under pressure. Phenomena such as harmonic contamination, voltage dips, transients and reactive current pose a constant threat to your equipment. Without permanent monitoring, these problems are invisible until the damage is done. Not only does this put you at financial risk due to downtime, but you may also fail to comply with applicable standards such as EN 50160. In addition, undetected overloads can lead to dangerous situations, including fire hazards.

HyTEPS transforms your installation from a 'black box' to a transparent and manageable system. By continuously measuring and monitoring, you can spot problems long before they escalate into calamities. In our view, monitoring is therefore not a cost item, but a necessary insurance for your primary business process.

The HyTEPS Monitoring Model: from sensor to strategy

Monitoring is often unfairly reduced to "putting up a meter". But to actually convert data into operational reliability and efficiency, a chain of measures is needed. HyTEPS is unique in the market because we control and implement this complete chain. We seamlessly connect Operational Technology (OT) with your Information Technology (IT) to give you one working system.

Our integrated approach rests on four inseparable pillars:

  1. Software (Insight): A central, brand-independent platform for visualisation, alarming and automatic reporting.
  2. EMS (Steering): An intelligent Energy Management System that actively intervenes to optimise energy flows (e.g. peak shaving).
  3. Services (Understanding): The human factor. Commissioning, maintenance and in-depth analysis by our specialised engineers.
Monitoring Engineers

As a result, you do not have to deal with four different parties (a supplier, an installer, a software builder and a consultant). HyTEPS relieves you completely, so you can be sure that the data is correct and the technology works.

Hardware: the basis of reliable measurements

The quality of your decisions depends directly on the quality of your data. If the input is inaccurate, the analysis is worthless. That is why HyTEPS works exclusively with high-quality measuring instruments that comply with the strictest international standards. Whether you are looking for a simple kWh meter for internal settlement or an advanced Class A Power Quality Analyzer for in-depth grid analysis; we have the right solution.

Power Quality Analyzers

Our hardware stands out in three crucial areas:

  1. Extreme precision (Class A): All our analysers have Class A certification according to IEC 61000-4-30. This means that the measurement methodology is standardised and extremely accurate. This is essential in legal disputes with grid operators or insurance issues; you have indisputable proof.
  2. Maximum Connectivity: Our meters are designed for integration. They feature open protocols such as Modbus TCP/IP, MQTT, BACnet or 4G communication as standard. This makes integration into existing BMS or SCADA systems easy.

We supply and install meters for every layer in your installation pyramid: from the main distributor (incoming field) to the individual end group or machine. This allows you to create a finely-meshed measurement network that directly locates the source of any disturbance.

Power Quality Software: your data visual and understandable

Hardware generates data, but software creates insight. Without proper visualisation, you will drown in numbers. Our Power Quality Software collects the measurement data from all your meters in one clear dashboard. Depending on your data security policy, we implement this locally on your own server (On-Premise) or in a highly secure Cloud environment.

The software is modular and serves both the facility manager and the technical specialist:

  1. Real-time Dashboarding: see at a glance the current power (kW), voltage trends and the Power Factor (cos phi) of your overall installation or specific departments.
  2. Power Quality Heatmaps & Events: Visualise complex phenomena such as harmonic pollution and phase imbalance over long periods of time. The software automatically logs 'events' (such as a dip) and plots them on the ITIC curve, so you can immediately see whether equipment was at risk.
  3. IT Integration & Connectivity: We ensure that data does not remain in a silo. Through API links, we integrate measurement data into your building management system (BMS).
  4. Automated Reporting: No need to log in daily. Set up automatic reports and receive weekly or monthly PDFs in your mailbox with the health status of your installation and energy consumption per cost carrier.
Power Quality Dashboard

With our software, you make the transition from reactive maintenance ("there is a fault, call the engineer") to proactive management ("we see a trend that could become a fault next week, let's intervene").

Energy Management System (EMS): smart and safe switching

Where monitoring stops at 'insight', an Energy Management System (EMS) goes a step further to 'action'. An EMS actively controls your installation. It is the brain that communicates with your consumers (such as charging stations, heat pumps, HVAC or production lines), your generators (solar energy) and your storage systems (batteries) to optimise energy flows in real time.

Engineers look at the energy management system (EMS)

Strategic applications of the HyTEPS EMS:

  1. Peak Shaving: The system detects when you are in danger of exceeding your contracted power. It rapidly shifts non-critical processes back or switches battery storage. This prevents sky-high fines from the grid operator.
  2. Trading in imbalance markets: Combined with battery storage, EMS can control energy prices: charging at low (or negative) prices, and discharging or consuming at high prices.
  3. Congestion management: In areas with grid congestion, EMS ensures that you always stay within the physical limits of your connection, without shutting down your business processes.

Note: The HyTEPS Safety Guarantee This is where we make a difference. Many EMS providers look purely at financial optimisation. They switch large capacities on and off abruptly to save money. However, this frequent and hard switching can cause huge Power Quality problems (such as voltage dips, inrush currents and transients). HyTEPS is unique because our EMS is Power Quality aware. We control your power flows, while continuously monitoring whether the technical limits of voltage and power quality are not exceeded. We guarantee that savings never come at the expense of the lifetime of your installation. So you save costs without scrapping your assets.

Commissioning & IT/OT Integration: We make it work

The biggest stumbling block in monitoring projects is often the implementation phase. Meters are physically hung, but then not configured. IP addresses are not released by IT. Data does not arrive in the dashboard. The result is an investment that does not pay off. HyTEPS takes this worry completely out of your hands.

Our engineers take care of complete commissioning from A to Z:

  1. Physical verification: We verify in the distribution cabinet that current transformers and voltage taps are correctly connected. Errors in phase sequence or polarity are rectified immediately.
  2. Parameterisation: A meter 'out of the box' rarely works optimally. We configure meters specifically for your transformer ratios, grid type and desired log intervals.
  3. IT/OT Coupling: We build the bridge between operational technology (OT) and your IT network. Our specialists speak the language of your IT department. We support in setting up secure VPN tunnels, firewall settings, 4G routers and data routing.

Upon completion, you will receive a fully functioning system, tested and validated, including a delivery report and training for your staff.

Analysis & Reporting: from data to diagnosis

A dashboard full of graphs is valuable, but interpreting them correctly is priceless. When the THD(u) rises or 'flicker' is measured, what does this mean concretely for your machines? Is immediate intervention necessary or is it an acceptable deviation? Data without context is just noise.

Engineers engaged in analysis and reporting

HyTEPS' engineers therefore look with you. We offer periodic analysis services where we study your measurement data in depth. We act as the 'cardiologist' of your electrical installation:

  • We filter out false positives from the data so that you are not overwhelmed by unnecessary alarms.
  • We make connections and correlations (e.g. "Every Tuesday at 10:00 the voltage dips, exactly when machine X starts").
  • We provide clear, readable reports in understandable language, including concrete advice for improvement or filtering.

Whether you opt for a one-off 'second opinion' for an unexplained failure, or a periodic subscription for continuous monitoring: our expertise guarantees that you not only collect data, but actually benefit from it.

Frequently asked questions about Monitoring & EMS

Answer:

Energy monitoring focuses on quantity: how many kWh do you consume, where and when? This focuses on costs and savings. Power quality monitoring looks at the quality of that energy: how pure is the voltage (sine wave form), are there harmonics, dips or peaks? For high reliability, you need both insights.

Answer:

Yes, absolutely. Our EMS is brand-independent and can communicate with various inverters, battery systems (BESS) and charging stations. This allows you to store energy at low prices and use it at high prices or peak times, fully automated.

Answer:

Not necessary. Monitoring can be done locally (offline), with data stored on the meter or a local server. However, functionalities such as remote support, automatic updates and cloud reports do require a (secure) internet connection. We can also provide independent 4G routers for this purpose.

Answer:

This means that we do not leave until the system is working. We physically check the installation of the meters in the cabinet, configure the software parameters, test the connections to your IT network and instruct your team on how to use the dashboard.

Answer:

Increasingly so. For larger installations, insurers often require periodic inspections (such as SCIOS Scope 8/10/12) or permanent monitoring to eliminate fire risks due to overloading or poor connections (hotspots).
