Arc flashes occur whenever an electrical discharge takes place between conductors due to a fault or malfunction. Within just a few milliseconds, temperatures can rise above 10,000 degrees Celsius — that’s hot enough to melt clothing, deform tools, and cause severe injuries. An arc flash produces extreme heat, bright light, and powerful pressure waves, with potentially disastrous consequences for people as well as installations.
The Dutch Working Conditions Act (Arbowet) recognizes the dangers of electrical work but does not explicitly address arc flashes. Unlike the NFPA 70E guideline in the United States, no detailed arc flash protection standard exists in the Netherlands.
An arc flash can cause severe burns or hearing damage, and it can also shut down electrical installations and systems for extended periods. Preventive measures can be — quite literally — lifesaving, and can prevent significant damage and downtime.
