Bij Thialf in Heerenveen, internationaal bekend als het schaatshart van de wereld, draait alles om ijskwaliteit. Dagelijks traint hier de wereldtop van het langebaanschaatsen, shorttrack en kunstrijden. Om de ijsbanen onder extreme belasting perfect op temperatuur te houden, moeten de zware koelcompressoren 24/7 storingsvrij functioneren. Voor deze topsportfaciliteit geldt één simpele regel: uitval van de koeling is absoluut onacceptabel.

Toch kwam de continuïteit ernstig in gevaar. Een aantal jaar geleden ontplofte plotseling een zware frequentieregelaar in de elektrische installatie. Dit incident werd destijds nog weggeschreven als een onderhoudsprobleem. Toen twee jaar geleden echter opnieuw een regelaar ontplofte, sloeg de twijfel toe. De fabrikant van de componenten voerde metingen uit en ontdekte een significant probleem in de installatie: een verhoogde harmonische spanningsvervorming (THDu) van maar liefst 8%. Deze onzichtbare vervuiling in de voedingsspanning vormde een tikkende tijdbom op de bedrijfszekerheid van de faciliteit. Thialf zocht een expert die deze onzekerheid kon wegnemen en een definitieve oplossing kon garanderen.

Diagnose en modellering: De proactieve aanpak in detail

Om de exacte dynamiek van het netwerk bloot te leggen, voerden de engineers van HyTEPS op locatie Power Quality metingen uit, over de gehele installatie. Hierbij werd gemeten op alle Power Quality fenomenen. Onze analyse bevestigde de eerdere bevindingen: de harmonische vervorming van de spanning (THDu) overschreed structureel de grens van 8%. Hoewel frequentieregelaars zelf harmonische stromen genereren, zijn de interne componenten tegelijkertijd extreem kwetsbaar voor een vervuilde voedingsspanning. Deze wisselwerking veroorzaakte de destructieve thermische overbelasting in de compressors.

Het ongecontroleerd laten van deze netvervuiling leidt onvermijdelijk tot versnelde veroudering van apparatuur en herhaaldelijk falen. Door de complexe meetdata nauwkeurig te modelleren, transformeerden we een onvoorspelbaar probleem in een concrete, beheersbare uitdaging. Op basis van de verkregen data uit onze analyse ontwierpen we een nauwkeurige oplossing. We modelleerden de benodigde filtercapaciteit om de overbelasting te elimineren en de efficiëntie van het netwerk te optimaliseren. Deze proactieve aanpak zorgt ervoor dat we niet symptoom bestrijdend te werk gaan, maar het probleem bij de bron oplossen.

Solution implementation: certainty from design to delivery

Met het definitieve ontwerp in handen, implementeerden onze engineers twee Actief Harmonische Filters (AHF) binnen de installatie van Thialf. Deze systemen monitoren het netwerk real time en injecteren binnen milliseconden een tegengestelde stroom om de gedetecteerde vervuiling direct te neutraliseren. Omdat de koeling van het ijs geen moment onderbroken mocht worden, coördineerden we de inbedrijfstelling strak met de technische dienst. Hierdoor was de overgang naadloos en verliep het proces geheel zonder veiligheidsrisico’s.

De resultaten uit onze validatiemetingen zijn overtuigend: de harmonische spanningsvervorming is direct gedaald van een kritieke 8% naar ruim onder de 4%. Dit garandeert dat de vermogenselektronica weer ruim binnen de veilige marges opereert en volledig vrij is van thermische overbelasting. Om deze optimale Power Quality permanent te borgen, installeerden we vaste meters en sloot Thialf een beheercontract af. Ons monitoringsteam bewaakt de installatiedata nu continu, waardoor we proactief kunnen ingrijpen bij de minste afwijking. Storingen en oververhitte regelaars behoren hierdoor definitief tot het verleden.
