The Delta Works are the Netherlands' most important flood defence system. With an in-depth Power Quality analysis, we guarantee the uninterrupted operation of this critical installation.
The Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier is the largest and most famous Delta work in the Netherlands. During impending high water, the 65 colossal piers and gates, weighing up to 480 tonnes, must lower flawlessly to protect the hinterland. However, the barrier's electrical network has been undergoing a major modernisation over the past decade. With the introduction of heavy electronic loads and the impact of an increasing number of wind farms in the vicinity, new, complex challenges in electricity supply are emerging.
This modernisation creates an uncertain situation where undetected voltage anomalies pose an immediate risk to the operation of the flood defence system. Heijmans, responsible for the 10kV installation, has to be ahead of any kind of failure. "It must not happen that, when it comes down to it, the installation does not work," stresses Gertjan Noordstra (Heijmans). The urgency for absolute operational reliability, especially at water levels of more than 3 metres above sea level, requires a proactive approach in which we leave nothing to chance.

To anchor operational reliability, our engineers carried out a strategic, two-week Power Quality analysis on the electrical installation of the Top House and surrounding traffic shafts. Additionally, we conducted a one-day on-site Electromagnetic Compatibility and earthing study. We installed advanced measurement equipment at strategic locations such as the Top House, Roompot and Hammen, where we worked strictly according to the applicable safety protocols. During these measurements, we recorded both AC and DC voltages.
Our specialists monitored all electricity parameters and voltage events to immediately identify anomalies that could cause failures. For each anomalous parameter, we determined the cause and mapped how voltage distortion at one end of the network affects the rest of the installation. By doing a specific ground current measurement on the Main Ground Line, we gained insight into the residual current across the ground cables and understood exactly how the parts of the installation interact.
The data collected formed our foundation for measurably increasing operational reliability. We combined and analysed all data to find a clear correlation between measurements and component performance. Based on this diagnosis, our engineers formulated targeted conclusions and concrete recommendations. Together with the Heijmans maintenance team, we translated these technical insights into a proactive approach so that they are ahead of any potential problems.
Thanks to this targeted implementation, customers now have the assurance that the installation is ready when it matters. We eliminated uncertainties by determining exactly how all electronic loads and external factors interact with each other. With this, HyTEPS ensures network reliability and the management team ensures that one of the world's most unique installations is always functioning.

Our successful and proactive approach ensures that critical installations always perform, even under the most extreme conditions. Discover how we also take your operational reliability to the highest level by creating insight into your installation.
