Invisible harmonic contamination at Nyrstar posed a direct risk to the plant's operational reliability and technical service life. Our engineers identified the exact source of the contamination through in-depth Power Quality measurements and specialist analysis. By eliminating these risks, we now offer Nyrstar the guarantee of a stable plant and absolute security in every kilowatt.
Nyrstar Budel B.V. is the only zinc producer in the Netherlands responsible for a continuous production process of 290,000 tonnes of zinc per year. In this metallurgical-chemical process, zinc ore is processed via electrolysis, a procedure that requires huge currents of up to 77,000 amps per circuit.
To control these powers, installations use rectifiers. These components are essential, but at the same time are the source of heavy harmonic pollution. For Nico Hendrix, Sr. Project Engineer E&I, the impact was clear: the pollution led to unexplained failures and faulty equipment elsewhere in the grid. Uncertainty about the quality of the voltage supplied and the mutual influence of installation parts was a risk that had to be eliminated.

Our approach started with an in-depth analysis of the complex electrical infrastructure. To ensure technical authority, our engineers carried out extensive measurements at strategic points within the installation. In doing so, we used state-of-the-art equipment for accurate recording of all parameters.
By deploying specialised Power Quality measurements, we gained precise insight into harmonic currents and voltage distortion. These data formed the basis for our simulations and modelling. This allowed us not only to determine the current status, but also to predict future scenarios and the impact on the installation. The technical proposition was fully supported by actual data, in line with IEC standards.
Our engineers recommended connecting the filters directly to the medium voltage. This effectively tackles pollution at the source before it can spread through the rest of the installation. The result is a "clean" sine wave and a drastically reduced risk of failure of critical assets.
In this new world, Nyrstar enjoys plant stability. HyTEPS' proactive approach has minimised the risks of premature component obsolescence and unexplained failures. We took full responsibility from initial diagnosis to final delivery, resulting in peace of mind and certainty for the technical staff.

At Nyrstar, it is proven that insight leads to stability. Don't let harmonic contamination disrupt your production process. Our experts provide the diagnosis and solution that gives you peace of mind.
