By implementing continuous monitoring and an advanced energy management system, OVET B.V. gets the most out of their existing electrical installations. We accurately mapped consumption and invisible peaks, allowing the terminal to continue to safely electrify and expand without exceeding critical grid limits.
In the Zeeland section of North Sea Port, grid congestion poses a major obstacle to the sustainability and growth of large-scale consumers. OVET B.V., a specialist in the transhipment and handling of dry bulk goods with terminals in Vlissingen and Terneuzen, consequently came up against severe operational constraints. Obtaining new connections or extensions in this port area is extremely difficult. Consequently, the necessary electrification of cranes, the expansion of terminals and the installation of higher-capacity shore power facilities were under severe pressure, whilst customers and the government are demanding that CO₂ reduction plans be accelerated.
Recently, OVET found that consumption at the Vlissingen site was dangerously close to the limit of available connection capacity. In addition, their main operating assets, four floating cranes, were running in island operation, where large fluctuations, voltage fluctuations and harmonic contamination occur during lifting and quartering. This overall picture created an urgent need for security: a robust solution was needed to accurately monitor consumption and prevent outages or unplanned downtime due to peak loads.

To eliminate uncertainty around capacity, OVET B.V. decided to engage our expertise. Our engineers installed measuring equipment on all low-voltage installations behind the high-voltage connection. In addition, installations spread across the entire site are now continuously monitored. This gives us detailed insight into where and when power is required in the installation.
The measurement data showed surprising spikes and effects that were previously invisible. This data allowed us to analyse failures in a targeted way. When a report came in from the ICT department that a UPS had tripped, the measurement equipment allowed us to quickly and accurately find out exactly what had happened. The system allows engineers to zoom in on specific times of day, which means we don't just intervene in the event of faults, but focus on a preventive, decisive approach.
Thanks to detailed Power Quality reports, OVET B.V. implemented an advanced energy management system that allows them to make targeted choices. Peaks and overshoots are now clearly visible, the cause can be traced directly and targeted measures are taken immediately. The company now successfully applies peak shaving and, in consultation with other large consumers on the site, prevents heavy installations from switching on at the same time. Moreover, contamination by customers' variable speed drives is made visible, so that this is discussed in good time and future risks are excluded.
The result is peace of mind and operational security. Although OVET B.V. has received the commitment for a heavier connection, the clear energy management system prevents the immediate need for yet another reinforcement. Much smarter use is now being made of the existing capacity, and optimisations such as capturing and reusing energy released when the cranes are celebrated are under consideration. With plans to roll out extended monitoring in Terneuzen too, OVET B.V. has a permanent grip on the reliability and continuity of their services.

Like OVET B.V., do you not want to wait for grid reinforcement, but immediately get more efficiency and security from your current connection? Our engineers will be happy to analyse your situation.
